Getting your player ready...

It’s the time of year when many people are thinking about making big changes, and few can cause more stress than moving.

Whether it’s starting fresh at a new job across the country or trading up into a nicer home in the suburbs, moving can be a challenge. And the costs can add up fast.

Tips on how to save on your next move:

Lighten the load. The best way to cut expenses is to reduce the amount of stuff you move. More stuff means you’ll need to rent a bigger, more expensive truck. And moving companies typically set rates based on how much your belongings weigh and how far they need to be moved. Consider a garage sale or look into organizations that accept furniture donations.

Avoid a summer move. It’s best to avoid moving from mid-June through mid-September. Heightened demand enables moving companies to increase rates between 10 percent and 20 percent, on average.

It’s also cheaper to move in the middle of a month than at the end.
