DENVER—Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper has delivered a State of the State address that touts the Colorado’s continuing economic recovery and calls for more education spending.

The annual speech Thursday is the governor’s fourth.

He has mentioned the state’s difficult 2013, when deadly wildfires and flooding devastated several communities. He also has remembered last month’s shootings at Arapahoe High School. But Hickenlooper says the tragedies shouldn’t define Colorado.

He also has touted economic growth in the state and called on lawmakers to invest surplus money in higher education.

Members of the House and Senate, first responders to the disasters, and other dignitaries were present for the speech.
