WASHINGTON — Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, a fierce opponent of the expansion of the federal government, announced late Thursday that he will step down after the current congressional session ends in January 2015.
The 65-year-old Republican has been suffering from a recurrence of prostate cancer and hinted in a recent interview that his health troubles might force him to leave office before his current term expires in 2016. He already announced that he would not run for re-election.
“As a citizen, I am now convinced that I can best serve my own children and grandchildren by shifting my focus elsewhere,” he said in a statement.
Coburn was elected to the House as part of the 1994 Republican Revolution and to the Senate in 2004.
