After winning four , including the award for best rap song and best new artist, effectively shut-out the critically-acclaimed on Sunday. While the Internet was up in arms about Lamar being ignored, Macklemore himself felt he robbed the Compton rapper.
In a preemptive response to the backlash, Macklemore sent a message explaining the win and apologizing for “robbing,” Kendrick Lamar. In a screenshot of the text, Macklemore explains he planned to shout Kendrick out in his acceptance speech but froze up when the “move along” music came on. Included is Kendrick’s response, calling his loss a “wake up call.”
Macklemore’s text to Kendrick Lamar:
“You got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have. It’s weird and sucks that I robbed you. I was gonna say that during the speech. Then the music started playing during my speech and I froze. Anyway, you know what it is. Congrats on this year and your music. Appreciate you as an artist and as a friend. Much love”
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took home four Grammy’s at the prestigious music award show. Record companies, labels and artists can submit an artists’ work for nomination to the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, who decides the winners.
