Topping our picks of best Colorado shows this week are Crooks on Tape, Winter on the Rocks and more. We’ll be seeing you there, and if you don’t make it out, follow the music musings and our

3) Winter on the Rocks — Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Jan. 31, $52-$100

Now in its third year, Winter on the Rocks is quickly becoming a Colorado music tradition, thanks in part to smart booking and its unique atmosphere. Try to think of a more Colorado scenario: a concert at the iconic mountain amphitheater of Red Rocks in January, snow or shine. It’s as Colorado as weed, microbrews and skiing. Normally leaning toward younger, more adventurous audiences, the lineup this year on Jan. 31 includes the recently reunited hip-hop group Jurassic 5 and Ghostland Observatory. Last year’s lineup included Mackle-more & Ryan Lewis, who cleaned up at the Grammys on Sunday. ($52.80-$100, redrocksonline.com)

2) Ralph Stanley — Boulder Theater, Jan. 31, $30-$50

It’ll be a bittersweet night at the Boulder Theater on Jan. 31. Legendary bluegrass musician Ralph Stanley (lovingly called Dr. Ralph Stanley by his fans), stops in Colorado on his farewell tour. The 86-year-old founder of the Stanley Brothers has become one of his generation’s most respected country/bluegrass musicians throughout his six decades in the business. Stanley is best known for songs such as “Man of Constant Sorrow,” “Angel Band,” “Rank Strangers” and many others. ($30-$50, bouldertheater.com)

1) Crooks on Tape — Hi-Dive, Feb. 5, $10

Janky, clanging and awkward, Crooks on Tape’s 2013 debut album, “Fingerprint,” still has listeners as confused as they are impressed. Because it’s a head-scratcher, the album demands attention, your complete focus to dig into the sonic complexity. When the band performs at the Hi-Dive on Feb. 5 it will be just as interesting to see how the group pulls it together live. Upcoming Denver act, Distant Correspondent, is an added bonus as the night’s opener.
