DENVER—Aurora is planning the early release of six municipal jail inmates on Monday in a move the city blames on the Adams County sheriff.
For more than a year, Denver has housed some municipal inmates from Aurora for a fee after Adams County Sheriff Doug Darr began turning them away from his jail, citing an inmate population cap because of budget shortfalls. Denver has now decided to end the agreement with Aurora because of overcrowding.
Aurora City Manager George Noe sent a letter to Darr on Friday, saying he has “every expectation” the inmates, who have more than 100 arrests combined, will commit more crimes once they are released.
Aurora has sued the sheriff, questioning his ability to turn away inmates.
