Honorees
Player of the year: Chase Foster, Valor Christian
Coach of the year: Dave Ryder, Pueblo East
Foster ended his prep career without a state title, but he leaves as the best player in Class 4A.
The 6-foot-5, 190-pound forward led Valor to a 21-5 record. The Eagles were ousted by Pueblo East in overtime in the state quarterfinals.
“Chase was a big component of our team,” Valor coach Ronnie DeGray said. “Chase led us in scoring, rebounds, minutes played. … He was just an all-around great teammate.”
The senior averaged 20.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals. His athleticism and all-around game earned him a scholarship to the University of San Francisco.

Sharpley, a 6-7 senior forward, had the size to win battles inside and the shot to inflict damage from the outside.
He averaged 17.3 points, 9.2 rebounds and 4.1 blocks while leading the Jaguars to a 20-4 record. That mark included two victories over state champion Holy Family. Jefferson Academy earned a No. 1 seed in the state tournament field but was upset by Manitou Springs in the Sweet 16.

Baer finished his career as the most prolific scorer in Colorado schoolboy history. The 6-2, 185-pound senior guard scored 2,627 points in his four-year career. Coaches from across the state agreed that his offensive game put him head and shoulders above the 2A field.
“Brady’s been Akron basketball since he was a second grader,” Akron coach Greg Clarkson said. “He’s put Akron basketball back on the map,” said his coach, Greg Clarkson.
But it wasn’t just the 31.4 points per game that made Baer special. He also averaged 6.6 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 2.7 steals. Akron made it to the state title game before falling to Sanford.

Coach of the year: Dave Sheffield, Hi-Plains
A 6-5, 225-pound forward, Marzolf carried the load as Hi-Plains won its second state boys basketball championship.
“He’s as good as the best I’ve coached,” Hi-Plains coach Dave Sheffield said. “He brings new phases to his game every year. He has all the intangibles.”
Marzolf scored 22 points for the Patriots en route to a 52-51 victory over Caliche in the championship game. inthechampionshipgame??? For the season, he averaged 16.7 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 2.0 blocks.
“He’s a kid who was really versatile,” Sheffield said. “He ran the point for us and was most effective for us inside.”
