For its first EP, accurately titled “e.p.,” Denver post-hardcore power trio American Haiku issued limited edition cassette tapes. Even for novelty, it’s hard to imagine why a band would chose to release its music on a cassette tape, a dated technology that deserves to fill landfills. Unlike vinyl, there are really no sonic advantages to magnetic tape scraping across a head. That is, until you listen to American Haiku.
Taking a tip from bands like At the Drive-In, American Haiku is a post-hardcore, scream-o trio that plays tight, blistering music with a love for a bit of noisy fuzz. The clean sound of digital lays the fuzz bare, but one can imagine that on a cassette tape in a car with old speakers the sound reaches its purest fruition.
The tapes are now sold out, but “e.p.” is available for download on the band’s page and you can download “Grey Magic” below. Just imagine we dubbed it for you on an old Maxell. American Haiku will be supporting with a show at the on April 11.
