has shared “Chi-Raq,” a swagger-laden down-tempo new track with Chicago’s rising hip-hop star . Produced Boi-1nda along with Vinylz and Allen Ritter (best known as the beat-making duo behind Drake’s “The Language”), the track has muted bass lines and vibrant hi-hats.
In the song’s outro Minaj raps, “I might give you a new trick every week until this album drops…..I don’t know, I figured they wanted some more.” Here she’s referring to her new album, “The Pink Print,” which is due out later this year.
Lil Herb is the latest “drill rap” aficionado to watch. Unlike Chief Keef, Lil Reese and others, Lil Herb is more poignant in his rhymes about violence and guns. On “Chi-Raq,” the young rapper lists off an array of guns he supposedly owns with ease and experience, matching the perception in Minaj’s verse.
“Chi-Raq” is a nickname used to describe the violence currently devastating the city streets of Chicago. Many say “drill rap” is the force that reckons with the mainstream appeal and interest in the city’s youth and sound.
