CBS Thursday that Stephen Colbert, host of “The Colbert Report,” will replace David Letterman when the longtime “Late Show” host retires next year.

Letterman had announced April 3 that he will step down when his contract ends in 2015, and had been rampant as to who might replace him. While Colbert’s name was a popular suggestion, others said CBS should choose a or a minority, as the late-night talk show ranks have long lacked diversity.

In choosing Colbert, CBS gets a political satirist who has found great success on cable TV, but will his success translate to network television?
