Interview with Richard Schliebe, founder and co-owner

How did you get involved in this business?

I graduated from college in 1963, and was one of the first to graduate with a combined major in psychology and physical education. Even then, I could foresee that America was moving toward a focus on health and fitness, so I was excited to be on the cutting edge of an entire new industry and to be entering an industry that I knew, in my heart, could improve life quality for so many.

What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

There are three major differences between Club USA and other fitness facilities: 1. We focus on the entire family. Each member is individually assessed to determine their current fitness level and their goal, taking into consideration his or her specific issues. 2. We’ve had five major remodels in 26 years and are continually exploring new equipment, technology and science. 3. We deal with the entire lives of our valued members. We consult and counsel in many areas of exercise and nutrition, implement things to help today’s busy, stressed members (especially our nursery and kids programs), which allows them more quality time to care for themselves. We enhance the lives of our members by building quality relationships with them.

What do you like best about your line of work?

While all those who know me might think my greatest happiness comes from building a large and successful family-owned club, the truth is that the best part of my job and my life is meeting and knowing the amazing people at the club for nearly three decades. I am touched by their friendship, proud of their commitment and honored by their loyalty.

What is your business’ biggest challenge?

The greatest challenge is getting the community to understand just how very important exercise is to their lives, and to commit to an ongoing program, no matter how stressed or busy their lives are. It really does make a difference and those who embrace the “whatever it takes” attitude really do have an enriched life. Exercise helps reduce stress, improve stamina, improve cardio and muscular health, while providing this much needed “me time.”

Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

I am always looking, researching and connecting with our members. Just when we think we know as much as there is to know … we learn more, technology moves to the next level and science makes some additional progress. At Club USA, when we learn more, we work very hard to implement it successfully. We bring together our consulting physician, psychologist, sports trainers and nutritionist and approach each new program from the most educated position possible.
