is the Christmas for music aficionados and brick and mortar for music shop owners across the globe. A slew of exclusives are made available for this day by artists, and the list is pretty daunting, even for the most hardcore music fan. After further review, it would be a sin not to AT LEAST pickup one of these Record Store Day exclusives at your favorite local music shop. Speaking of local music shops, happening here in Denver.
Devo – Live at Max’s Kansas City 11/15/77 (LP, 2000 copies)
The legend of Max’s Kansas City in New York is on definite cult status. It’s one of those establishments where you wish the walls could actually speak. The year 1977 was a pretty big one for . The Ohio new wavers worked on a Neil Young film and covered the Rolling Stones with no proper album recorded. “Live at Max’s Kansas City” is as raw as it gets.
LCD Soundsystem “The Long Goodbye” LCD Soundsystem Live at Madison Square Garden (5LP box set)
James Murphy pulled the plug on before they reached global domination status. Murphy cites his new focus on producing as one of the reasons for calling it quits. Five nights in New York in 2011 LCD Soundsystem just shut up and played the hits before the act took its last curtain call.
Notorious B.I.G. “Live After Death” (3LP)
The Notorious B.I.G.’s last album title eerily carried a strong tinge of foreshadowing in a time when the double disc wasn’t out of the ordinary. Biggie changed the name of the game with his short stint in the business making it normal to bring Versace references to the average listener.
Gram Parsons – Alternate Takes from GP and Grievous Angel (2LP)
The Flying Burrito brother, , is one of the most influential artists in the world of country music meets rock n roll. The “Grievous Angel” had already been member of the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers by the time the Harvard student had decided to hook up with Emmylou Harris to record sweet music. This Record Store Day exclusive includes gems from Parsons’ solo albums that didn’t make the cut.
Of Montreal – Satanic Panic in the Attic 10 year Anniversary Edition (2LP, 2000 copies with Disc 1 on yellow vinyl and Disc 2 on blue vinyl)
The weirdness behind is public information. I once witnessed lead singer Kevin Barnes marry the city of Austin at Emo’s during SXSW many years ago. The charming peculiarity behind the Athens rockers is part of what draws fans to the spirit animal of John Waters.
