John Garnsey, who joined Vail Mountain’s trail crew in 1974 and rose to head of global development, will retire after the 2015 Vail/Beaver Creek World Alpine Ski Championships, which he helped bring to the Vail Valley for the third time.

In 2008 he became the head of global mountain development for Vail Resorts, traveling the world in search of potential acquisitions for the resort operator.

Vail chief Rob Katz credited Garnsey with developing the global profile of Vail and Beaver Creek, while also helping the company execute its new urban-ski-areas strategy.

It’s not likely Garnsey will drop from the public eye. He serves on many boards, including the National Ski Areas Association, the Vail Valley Foundation and the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team Foundation.
