Summer Jam, Eagulls and more make our list of best Colorado shows this week. We’ll be seeing you there, and if you don’t make it out, follow the music musings and our
3) Lionel Richie, CeeLo Green — Red Rocks Amphitheatre, June 11
WARNING: There is no ceiling on Red Rocks Amphitheatre, so any attempt to dance on it would likely result in you floating into space. That is, if we really understand the complex physics required to dance on any ceiling… Anyway, Lionel Richie is coming to Red Rocks on June 11, and no, this show wasn’t only put into our Best Shows so we could make that ceiling joke. Richie is one of the best selling artists of all time, and it’s pretty cool that he’s playing with CeeLo Green, whom you could easily count as one of Richie’s soul and R&B proteges.
2) Summer Jam: Kendrick Lamar, Juicy J — Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre, June 6
He’s at the top of the game right now, so itap only fair that Kendrick Lamar headlines Colorado’s biggest hip-hop bash, Summer Jam. Lamar’s 2012 album, “Good Kid, M.A.A.D City,” brought him critical acclaim, a platinum certification and seven Grammy nominations. Among the long list of hip-hop artists on the Summer Jam lineup are a few other notable mentions, including Juicy J of Three 6 Mafia and up-and-coming Australian rapper Iggy Azalea. Also scheduled to kick off the night is local MC Trev Rick, who is the first Denver act to perform at Summer Jam in nearly a decade. The hip-hop party hits Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre on June 6 and is sold out.
1) Eagulls — Larimer Lounge, June 7
The dark intensity of Eagulls’ debut, self-titled album matches well with vocalist George Mitchell’s stage presence, which is pretty similar to a James Bond villain. The frontman of the England post-punk band stalks the stage looking like Red Grant in “From Russia with Love.” Clearly influenced by the Cure and Joy Division, Eagulls don’t bring anything groundbreaking, just something familiar (and well-loved) to a younger generation. Eagulls comes to Denver’s Larimer Lounge on June 7 after releasing its debut album and causing a stir at South By Southwest earlier this year. ($5-$12, larimerlounge.com)
