Getting your player ready...

Interview with Pat Tait, head golf professional

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: I was introduced to the game by my mother when I was 12 and enjoyed it. I worked on the maintenance side in high school during the summers. I started working in golf operations as an entry-level assistant pro and worked my way up in the business.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: I would like to think that patrons return to Raccoon Creek because of the fine condition and challenge of the golf course, coupled with a customer-service experience that rivals private clubs. My staff engages with all our customers to make them feel welcome and appreciated during their stay. Raccoon Creek is built on the historic Grant family ranch, which adds to the ambience and reminds you of a lifestyle in the West generations ago.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: I enjoy teaching young golfers to play the game. My four children learned to play at age 3 and still play the game. Golf is a game that teaches life skills, such as integrity, respect and sportsmanship. It is hard to imagine that working in an environment around a game like golf can be replaced by anything more rewarding.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Golf experienced a boom in the late 1990s and early 2000s where golf courses were being built at a high rate. The economy slowed, forcing many courses to close. The biggest challenge now is to continue to grow the game through marketing efforts, keep people in the game longer and hope players play golf more often.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: I officiate college basketball during the winter. I have enjoyed the balance between officiating in the off-season and operating a golf facility where I am involved in ensuring people are having a great time at Raccoon Creek.
