With the U.S. soccer team advancing in the World Cup in Brazil this week, soccer continues to make gains in popularity among Americans.
Sunday’s game against Portugal attracted nearly 25 million TV viewers in the U.S. – more than the average for a game during the NBA Finals, the World Series or Stanley Cup Finals.
And soccer is now the second most popular youth sport in the U.S., trailing only basketball.
So, while football (American football, that is) remains the undisputed king of sports in America, with the Super Bowl being the most watched event on TV every year and the NFL raking in more than $9 billion in annual revenues, soccer may yet give football a run for its money.
What do you think? Will soccer become more popular than football in the United States? Vote in our poll at right.
