Ind. same-sex marriages put in limbo

INDIANAPOLIS — Same- sex couples who rushed to courthouses across Indiana during the three days it was legal for them to get married there could face long months before they learn whether their unions are valid.

Legal experts disagreed about the issue Saturday, and it isn’t certain a clear answer will be reached any time soon.

A federal appeals court issued a stay Friday that put on hold a U.S. District judge’s ruling that struck down Indiana’s prohibition on same-sex marriage.

Aereo suspends service •NEW YORK — Online streaming service Aereo Inc. is temporarily closing down its operation, three days after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the television-over-the-Internet service was violating copyright law.

“We have decided to pause our operations temporarily as we consult with the court and map out our next steps,” chief executive officer Chet Kanojia wrote in a letter to customers posted on Aereo’s website Saturday.

Arizona wildfire passes containment lines •VERNON, ariz. — Fire crews were hoping that lighter winds Saturday would spur progress against a wildfire that has charred more than 8 square miles in eastern Arizona’s White Mountains and prompted crews to set up a shelter for evacuees.

The Red Cross announced Saturday that it had opened a temporary shelter after windy conditions pushed the San Juan fire past key containment lines.

Underwater robot event attracts 60 teams •ALPENA, mich. — About 60 teams from 18 states and 13 countries put underwater robots through their paces last week at the only federal freshwater marine sanctuary in the United States.

Officials said the 13th Marine Advanced Technology Education Remotely Operated Vehicle International Competition ended Saturday at Michigan’s Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The teams were awaiting word from the judges.

Albuquerque police sued over fatal shooting •ALBUQUERQUE — The family of a homeless camper killed by Albuquerque police in a shooting that generated national outcry and protests throughout the city filed a wrongful death lawsuit Friday and is seeking to force the department to make dramatic reforms.

The lawsuit filed in state District Court claims that the more than 40 officers dispatched to handle James Boyd had “no meaningful control” of the standoff, and their lack of training led to his death.

Woman suspected of spraying child with pesticide•GROVER BEACH, calif. — A 60-year-old California woman faces child cruelty charges after police say she sprayed a 7-year-old neighbor in the face with a pesticide.

Officers responded Wednesday to a condominium complex in Grover Beach on the Central Coast after reports of an assault on a young girl. Investigators determined the child was approached by Julie Wilhelmina Rodenhuis and sprayed with a weed killer. The child was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital.
