Interview with Sandy Dupree, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: This is a long story. My husband and I were driving home from church and I saw a small store. My comment was that it would be a cute music store. The rest is history. We were able to start at that location and moved to our current location about three years ago. I have always considered my position to be the “backup man,” but when my husband passed away suddenly in December 2012, that role changed dramatically. I always tell people honestly that I do not play an instrument, but I do know enough about music to be dangerous.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: Our business puts people first. We aim to serve the need of the individual by assisting in finding just the right instrument, be it a piano, guitar, band instrument or orchestral instrument. Then, we work on finding the accessories needed for the customer to have the best experience with that instrument, be it an amplifier, sheet music, straps, reeds or whatever. Our desire is that our customers are successful musically.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: My most favorite experience is when you hand a student a band instrument, the student gets that twinkle in his/her eye and then the ah-ha moment when that student successfully makes notes on that instrument. I really love those “ah-ha” moments.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: My biggest challenge is learning all about the business. When Don passed away so suddenly, there was no one to go to, to ask the questions and find the information. It takes me twice as long, but I fight to find what’s needed.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: I would say that our biggest surprise for Brighton would be to learn that, yes, Brighton does have a music store. We are able to serve you, or order what you would need musically.
