Westminster crews are that has knocked out water service to the surrounding neighborhood.

“Detours are in effect by drivers should avoid the whole area,” said Joe Reid, the city’s public information officer.

The pipe burst late Tuesday night and the damage is extensive and requires major repairs, said Stephen Gay, the city’s utilities operations manager.

The break initially discharged more than 600 gallons of water a minute and several sections of pipe have to be dug up and replaced.

“We expect to have water service restored by 4 p.m. (Thursday), but there will still be crews out here the next few days backfilling and patching so the flow of traffic continue to be interrupted,” Gay said.
