Residents of Lafayette are to reconsider an ordinance that bans residents from keeping bees in their backyards.

The ordinance is based on the city’s belief that bees are “not household pets but rather animals and thus are not permitted on residential properties.”

Denver and Louisville, among other Colorado cities, do permit beekeeping on residential property.

A Denver Post argues that honeybees are not a threat and that they are a benefit to nature, as they pollinate crops, flowers and plants and are vital to the human food supply.

What do you think? Should backyard beekeeping be allowed in Colorado cities? Vote in our poll at right.
