Mayor Hancock hugs Sheriff Gary Wilson after announcing that Wilson will step down. (Kathryn Scott Osler, The Denver Post)
Re: “Denver sheriff steps down amid turmoil,” July 22 news story.
Good for Denver Mayor Michael Hancock. It was and has been time for a change. Allegations of abuse and other inappropriate behavior by police break down everything from trust to respect. A recent video, showing a sheriff’s deputy punching and kicking an inmate, looked like Rodney King all over.
Hancock made the announcement during an awkward press conference that concluded with hugging the outgoing sheriff. I thought it was a bit odd that Gary Wilson was there in the first place. Good luck to Elias Diggins. Remember: “Everyone matters.”
