Lakewood and Fort Collins recently their public-smoking restrictions to electronic smoking devices (such as e-cigarettes and vaporizers), banning their use wherever cigarettes are prohibited.

Edgewater was the first to ban e-devices where smoking is not allowed, while Louisville, Golden, Commerce City and Durango are in various stages of extending their own public smoking bans to e-cigs and vaporizers.

Justification for the bans includes law enforcement’s concern about what substances people are using in the devices, in addition to concerns about how the devices are marketed.

Proponents of e-cigarettes say they are safer than traditional cigarettes and are harmless to passersby.
