Last year’s inaugural (then called the Psychedelic Light and Sound Festival) started modestly, with about 250 fans of squalling, hypnotic, trippy guitar rock descending on the RiNo district to hear local and national emissaries of the genre.

This year organizers are hoping to more than double the attendance with an expanded lineup that features national acts Cosmonauts, The Vacant Lots and Guy Blakeslee (the Entrance Band) plus locals Snake Rattle Rattle Snake, Tjutjuna, Ned Garthe Explosion, Colfax Speed Queen, Prismwaves, Rumtum and Paw Paw — among more than a dozen others. Founders Ray Koren (Thee Dang Dangs) and Jordan Wyatt (Prismwaves) have also expanded the venues this year to include Savoy at Curtis Park, Larimer Lounge and the Big Wonderful Sustainability Park.

The final mind-melting and eardrum blowing moments of the evening came from Tjutjuna’s ferocious and loud set at the Meadowlark, where the band’s innovative noise rock proved that psychedelic music isn’t just for hippies.

Denver Psych Fest takes place from 2 p.m.-2 a.m. on Aug. 16 at venues around 27th and Larimer Streets. Tickets cost $15-$20.
