Funny how these things come around …
Cherokee Trail, which has established itself as a Class 5A power, lost Cameron Smith, its talented running back, during the most recent Christmas holidays. The family moved to Utah.
However, consider the irony – Smith transferred to Bingham High School. If that rings a bell, it should. Bingham is a state champion that has beaten two-time 5A champion Valor Christian in back-to-back seasons by a combined four points.
Valor Christian also is the team that has eliminated Cherokee Trail the past two seasons. In 2012, Valor beat Cherokee tTtrail 9-0 in the big-school finale. Last season, Valor knocked out the Cougars 42-23 in the semifinals.
And back to Smith … Cougars coach Monte Thelen said the program will sorely miss the senior, who was certain to become the program’s all-time leading rusher and touchdown maker.
“Just a great kid,” Thelen said.
