Interview with Brian Bauer, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: I wasn’t happy with my previous occupations. I love to talk to people because everyone has a story to tell that can make a difference in another person’s life. Plus I love to work with my hands and I wanted my own business.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: I am an independent barber, not a big chain. When you come into this shop, it gives you a feel of an old fashioned shop of yesteryear. I have had many, many older guys come in and mention that this reminds them of their childhood shop they used to go to. There is a comfort in those old shops and I wanted this one to feel the same.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: I go back to the talking with people (especially the veterans) and them telling me their stories. I will keep their stories alive to honor them. I love to tell my customers that this is the place where we solve all the world’s problems in 15 minutes, but the problem is that the world isn’t listening to us.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Learning how to get the word out that there is an old fashioned barbershop. There are so many avenues of advertising that I’m not aware of. I’m an old dinosaur and I’m still learning about them.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: A very large amount of my customers say that they were looking for an old fashioned shop and that they couldn’t find one, and then they stumbled upon me by accident. The simple neighborhood shops are disappearing and the big, impersonal chain shops are growing.
