Eye on … sun devils

For the record: No. 17 Arizona State improved to 2-0 Saturday night with a 58-23 victory at New Mexico. It was ASU’s first victory on the road against a nonconference opponent in eight years. This weekend in Boulder will mark the Pac-12 opener for ASU and Colorado.

Trending: Known more for its passing attack throughout the years, ASU ran for 423 yards against the Lobos. That marked the first time for the Sun Devils to net 400 ground yards since a 1996 win against Arizona.

Who’s hot: Junior running back D.J. Foster (5-foot-11, 205 pounds) rushed for 216 yards Saturday night to become the first Sun Devils player to surpass 200 yards in a game since 2001. His night was highlighted by a 49-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half.

Who’s not: After a 35-point victory, this is getting picky but the Sun Devils defense struggled at times to get New Mexico’s option attack off the field. The Lobos (0-2) recorded 20 first downs and maintained possession 34:49, compared to 25:11 for ASU’s offense.

Key stat: ASU outgained New Mexico 621-337 in total offense.

What you may not know: For Colorado, this will be the earliest date on the calendar for a conference game in 125 years of CU football.
