Summer is not officially over, but all the signs are there. Labor Day has passed, kids are back in school and the Foothills Park and Recreation District has begun its fall programming for 2014.
Foothills is expanding its art and theater programs in the community and as a result is offering more dance and acting classes for youth
2-14.
The success of the Foothills Theater Company, which has done a few plays in the past year, including a has led to a greater interest and served as a catalyst.
“What we’ve been focusing on is expanding the arts program in the community. In the process, we’re getting a lot of interest from youth, as well,” said Regina Smith, the district’s arts supervisor.
The district is adding theater classes for youth and acting classes for young adults along with preschool theater classes.
For dance, ballet is the focus of most of the programming, but this year, children will have the opportunity to explore tap and jazz. Also, the hip-hop dance classes are popular.
Any child in a dance class is also eligible to be in the district’s production of “The Nutcracker” in December. The lead roles will be filled by audition, but anyone in a class can be part of the show.
“The Nutcracker” production started in 2006 and was originally held in a gym. Now, the play runs for two shows on Dec. 12 and 13 at the Columbine High School auditorium.
Other art programs include visual arts classes and pottery, as well as a “painting and sipping” class where members can paint and drink wine at the Penalty Box inside the Edge Ice Arena.
“We’re excited about our season and everything we have to offer for all ages,” Smith said.
Foothills Park and Recreation executive director Ronald Hopp said the district has explored expanding the arts programs because it is something the community can get behind. The district has secured some outside funding to help pay for the additional offerings.
“I think it’s great that we’re able to expand offerings to provide services for a more diverse population,” Hopp said.
In other programming, sports and activities get ready to move indoors for the fall and summer. Ice hockey and gymnastics get going while golf remains an outdoor sport.
“We’re excited about that,” said Barb Butler, manager of recreation programs at Foothills.
Programs started Sept. 8, but Butler said youth and adults can still sign up on the . As long as there are openings, people can still join classes. Rates vary for Foothills Park and Recreation residents and nonresidents.
Registration for winter programming will begin Oct. 27.
