Getting your player ready...

The intersection of East First Avenue and University Boulevard in Cherry Creek North will be closed this weekend as workers try to get ahead of schedule and complete the storm sewer-street reconstruction project.

Denver Public Works on Tuesday said the closure is designed to allow the project to finish three weeks ahead of schedule, reduce impact on commuters and support an early start to the holiday shopping season. The new project completion date is Nov. 1.

If weather permits, Denver Public Works will close some lanes at 7 p.m. Saturday. The intersection will be fully closed by 10 p.m.

According to the plan, the intersection will reopen by 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Access to homes, businesses and the mall will be maintained throughout the closure. Public Works stressed there will be no impact on Friday night’s “Celebrate Fashion” event in Cherry Creek North.

Commuters who use East First Avenue or University Boulevard are advised to use alternate routes. Regional Transportation District buses will be on detours.

A full closure of the intersection will allow the work to be completed more quickly in a single phase instead of in multiple phases as originally planned, Public Works said.
