Bass Pro Shops is considering alternatives for raising funds, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Springfield, Mo., company has hired Moelis & Co. for help with the process, which is in its early stages, the people said. One possibility is the sale of a minority stake, which could value the company in the billions, they said. It is unclear what the company would use the money for.

Bass Pro traces its roots to the early 1970s, when founder Johnny Morris rented a trailer, which he filled with premium fishing tackle because he was dissatisfied with the tackle in local stores.

Bass Pro now operates close to 100 stores in the U.S. and Canada, some of which have full-service restaurants and bowling alleys.
