The Jefferson County PTA board denounced the possible formation of a school district curriculum review committee, which was scheduled to be discussed at Thursday’s board of education meeting.

The nine-member committee would first look at instructional materials for AP U.S. history, with an eye toward promoting “citizenship, patriotism, essentials and benefits of the free enterprise system, respect for authority and respect for individual rights,” according to board materials posted online.

The memo goes on to say that “materials should not encourage or condone civil disorder, social strife or disregard of the law. Instructional materials should present positive aspects of the United States and its heritage.”

PTA president Michele Patterson said in a release that the board, which is in charge of the state’s second-largest school district, is moving into “dangerous territory.”

“Jeffco Schools employs professionals, educational experts, who should be making these decisions,” she said. “Censorship is not an issue parents or our Jeffco community will take lightly.”
