dance: Troupe is “stepping” into fine-arts venues

Today. The Washington D.C.-based dance troupe Step Afrika! has a great buzz and a unique mission, expanding the form known as “stepping” into the country’s fine arts venues. Stepping is popular among African-American fraternities and sororities on college campuses. The movement is a complicated version of line dancing, with precision stomping, clapping, body slapping and chanting. It’s athletic and competitive and infectious to anyone watching. Step Afrika!, which formed 20 years ago, has a dual mission. It uses stepping as an educational tool, teaching young people teamwork and discipline. But it also tours with a stage show that combines storytelling, performance and audience interaction. It brings the act to Macky Auditorium, University of Colorado Boulder campus, at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19. $14-$57. or 303-492-8008
