At Golden High School, there will be no student walk-out on Thursday.
That’s what the school’s principal, Brian Conroy, hopes at least after meeting with pupils in a discussion about the .
“At this point, walking out of school is counter-productive,” Conroy said in a letter to parents and students on Wednesday. “The message many of our student leaders is trying to convey are becoming muted by the negative attention that the walk-outs are producing.”
While he is “proud” that students have made sure their voices are heard by the board, they now have the leadership’s attention and it is time to “focus on ways to communicate directly with the board,” Conroy said.
Students were planning to walk out of classes on Thursday.
The principal said he is encouraging Golden students to write letters, attend a school board meeting and clearly articulate their wants and needs.
“There are some students who are walking out, not to make their voices heard on this issue, but rather to leave class because they simply think they can,” he wrote.
The board is holding a meeting on Thursday night to discuss the controversial proposal to create a curriculum review committee that .
Board member Julie Williams introduced the proposed committee to review the AP U.S. history curriculum last month, starting the county’s unrest. Williams said the committee would promote “positive aspects” of U.S. history and avoid encouraging “civil disorder, social strife or disregard of the law.”
