Saguache’s first ever Alfred “Alferd” E. Packer Festival is Oct. 11. A day remembering his spirited past, the festival kicks off with a zombie run and 5K “cannibal” crawl at 9 a.m., followed by a beard and mustache contest, a Packer film festival and more. The celebration concludes with Saguache’s fourth annual chocolate festival at 6 p.m.

Hand-crafted shopping

Get a head start on holiday shopping at Holyoke’s annual Holly Daze Craft and Gift Show on Oct. 25. More than 100 artisans will display items like fine art, jewelry and handcrafted goods.

Spooky choo-choo

The Trick-or-Treat train at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden takes off for Halloween Town Oct. 25 and 26. Hop aboard the locomotive with conductors and engineers in full costume, take part in fall activities, visit a pumpkin patch and more. The train departs every 30 minutes between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tickets are $5 for children, $15 for adults, $10 for seniors or $30 for the entire family. Museum members get in free.

Smashing pumpkins

Idaho Springs’ 6th annual Pumpkin Smash Festival is Nov. 1. Bring the previous day’s Jack-O-Lantern to this free family event to learn about composting and enjoy fall-themed contests, children’s activities and more.
