In Colorado’s U.S. Senate race, incumbent Democrat Mark Udall faces Republican Challenger Cory Gardner. (AP file photos)

In the upcoming U.S. Senate race, an important consideration can be lost in the bitter dialogue. Any Colorado senator will advocate for legislation and/or funding in support of Colorado’s unique issues — issues such as federal wildland fire funding and firefighting aircraft assistance for instance.

Advocacy for these sorts of matters will always take place no matter who our senators are. What matters most in selecting a senator is Colorado’s senatorial vote on national matters. Colorado is a “purple” state and it will be most appropriately represented by a commensurate balance and diversity among its two senators. Republican Cory Gardner would be the best choice to join Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet in Washington.

I’m having difficulty understanding how Cory Gardner, a member of the most unproductive Congress in history, is going to “shake up the Senate,” as his ads proclaim. This Congress has done nothing to address issues like reforming the tax code, immigration policy, or gun laws. Nor have they addressed how to ensure the future soundness of Social Security or Medicare. I see nothing in Gardner’s past performance that indicates he would do anything to take on even one of these issues.
