Interview with Amber Isaac, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: After 13 years working backstage on Broadway in New York City, I moved to Colorado and wanted to work with animals. I had never heard of alpacas and discovered them randomly one day when I drove by an alpaca ranch by chance. I started researching them online, fell in love with suri alpacas and scheduled a ranch visit to meet them in person. I was hooked!

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: Silken Suri Alpaca Ranch offers clients many unique opportunities. First, I exclusively raise suri alpacas, which are quite rare (only 17 percent of the alpacas in the U.S. are suris). I choose top-quality genetics from all over the country, so clients confidently enjoy one-stop shopping when purchasing their first herd. Also, those who don’t yet have a ranch of their own can board their new alpacas on my 40-acre ranch with sprawling pastures and a brand new 3,200-square-foot barn. In addition, all new clients are welcome to partake in my free mentorship program. I truly support clients after their purchase with ongoing group seminars and individual instruction.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: Owning alpacas is a wonderful escape from the day-to-day strain of corporate life. Can you imagine looking out at an “office” of green pastures and the serenity of watching your alpacas grazing in your own back yard? Add to that the joyful pronking of little alpaca babies and you can get an idea of why I love what I do.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Running your own business can be as challenging as it is rewarding. There can be risks involved getting started, but I always tell clients that you get out of it what you put into it. In other words, if you have the passion and the drive to make your business succeed, you’re already ahead of the game. I made it happen and so can you.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: You don’t need to have an agricultural background to succeed in raising alpacas. Being from New York City, I had never even seen an alpaca, let alone had an idea of how to care for one. That’s why I focus a lot on mentoring my clients. I tell them that if a “city girl” can do it, so can they.
