Dianne Leeth hikes through the flower-covered hillside on Sun Park Trail in the West Elk Wilderness Area of Gunnison National Forest. (Dan Leeth, Special to The Denver Post)
Re: “Toasting 50 years of bliss, thanks to Wilderness Act,” Oct. 12 travel column.
Dan Leeth describes the Colorado wilderness as a place to “escape the din of civilization.” Not quite: Jets from Los Angeles to New York, Miami to Seattle, etc., pass over constantly. Once your ears adjust to the absence of traffic, lawnmowers and boomboxes, you realize there’s a steady distant thunder. Apparently the Department of the Interior is unable to get the co-operation of the Federal Aviation Administration in reining in the pilots’ total liberty in choosing their routes. Respecting wilderness would entail small losses in money and convenience. Many would agree that wilderness is worth it.
