LITTLETON, CO - OCTOBER 09: Terri Strau, left, and her children Brendan, 17, middle, and Emily, 13, right work on signs for an upcoming weekend protest at their home in Littleton, CO on on October 9, 2014. Jefferson County is poised to play a major role in the 2014 elections in part by how the JeffCo school board politics have spilled into other races. Straut's children attend Jeffco schools. The family attended protests against the Jeffco board's decision to have a curriculum review committee which many students and parents opposed. The conservative Jefferson County School Board majority passed a modification to the current curriculum review. The fierce fight over curriculum in Jefferson County Schools has sparked weeks of protests. The focal point has been AP U.S. History, but other classes are part of the plan as well. Re: “In key Colorado county, a volatile election with big stakes,” Oct. 13 news story.

This headline may well be correct, but the article is spun entirely in favor of the teachers union. The AP History issue is a red herring, promoted by the union. Most Jeffco parents I’ve talked to merely believe that history should be taught straight up — both the bad and the good. They are, however, very much concerned that a large percentage of kids in Jefferson and Golden High schools are not proficient in reading, English and math. What they want are teachers who are paid and promoted on the basis of whether they can actually teach — not on the basis of how many years they have been a union member. That is the true issue. The sooner the union realizes that, the sooner the kids of Jefferson County will have a chance to be prepared — for college and for life.
