
Television viewers got a little more flexibility last week when HBO and CBS
For too long, viewers have been held hostage by cable and satellite TV providers who refused to offer a la carte packages.
To receive the coveted ESPN or HBO, viewers have had to buy packages with dozens of other cable channels they would seldom watch. And the prices continued to spiral upward.
The cord-cutting trend continues as people have become more attracted to broadband streaming services like Netflix and Hulu.
It was only a matter of time before networks followed their lead.
Surely, more cable networks will join HBO and CBS, allowing TV watchers to build their own a la carte menus.
The big player will be ESPN, the marquee sports offering by cable providers. Live sporting events draw high ratings.
If viewers are ever allowed to buy ESPN without a cable subscription, the cable industry is in for a major challenge.
