First-grade students at Amos Steck Elementary in Denver attend the first day of school in 2011. (AAron Ontiveroz, Denver Post file)
Whether Amendment 68 is defeated or not, there is still an overwhelming need for resources to rebuild aging schools. The legislature and voters are miserly when asked to increase taxes for such a pressing need. Thus, we should consider other possible sources of sustainable resources for our schools.
One source to consider is raising (doubling or tripling) the annual license plate fee paid for specialty plates. You know these — “Pioneer, “ “Italian American, “Broncos Fan,” “Respect for Life,” “Proud Mom of an Honor Student,” and so many more.
Increasing the annual plate fee will generate considerable and sustainable funds for our schools and universities. These folks could then tout they are contributing to Colorado’s educational system.
