Wheeler, from Plymouth, Minn., and a three-year player at the University of Minnesota, was a 2014 U.S. Olympian who has a history of producing big goals against the Avalanche. He has three goals in seven games this season and, like his teammates, has yet to really find his stride.
NOTEBOOK
Avalanche: Semyon Varlamov will open in goal, his second consecutive start after coming off the seven-day disabled list (groin). … Defenseman Zach Redmond will play in his second game of the season after making his Avs debut Friday. Redmond, who had an assist and two shots in 12:18 against Vancouver, was drafted by the Atlanta/Winnipeg franchise and played his first 18 NHL games with the Jets over the past two seasons.
Jets: They are minus-7 in goal margin, the second Central Division team in minus territory. The Avs are division-low minus-8. … Winnipeg is completing a five-game homestand and looking for its second win there. The Jets are 1-3 and have been outscored 11-6 on the homestand.
