This season, one particular Democratic campaign strategy keeps assaulting voters with its stupidity. The narrative goes something like this: “You thought that Republican Politician X cares about women. But Republican Politician X supports banning abortion, and so he really is out of touch with women.”

This strategy paints an offensively simplistic picture of women. Most people know that “women” is a group containing independent, diverse individuals. Because biology does not determine ideals, women are going to fall on various sides of the abortion debate. Some women are interested in preserving legal access to an abortion. Other women are appalled at the thought of prenatal murder being legal. Still other women simply have not thought much about abortion, and are more concerned with different political areas of importance. Unsurprisingly, the ethical convictions of men fall all along this same spectrum.

Morality is not gendered, and women are not a monolithic voting bloc of conformist ethical simpletons. Please, Democrats, give it a rest.
