The Douglas County Coroner’s Office said two people whose bodies were discovered Sunday died as a result of a murder-suicide.
Kacey Kay Heberlein, 23, was killed by a single gunshot wound, the coroner said. Donald Christopher Bankert, 26, was ruled to have killed himself.
Castle Rock police were called to a home on the 4000 block of Old Windmill Way at 8:30 p.m. Saturday to conduct a welfare check after Heberlein’s family grew concerned when she missed a meeting with a family member that afternoon. A second call for a welfare check came in about midnight.
When police arrived, an initial investigation prompted authorities to call in the Douglas County Regional SWAT team. When SWAT entered the home at 8:15 a.m. Sunday, both Heberlein and Bankert were found dead.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
