Re: “A failure to stand up for marriage,” Oct. 27 letter to the editor.
Even assuming the truth of Tom Uebbing’s preposterous statement that same-sex marriages are of no value to society because they produce no children, his premise that only activities of value to “the state” should be permitted harkens back to George Orwell’s “1984.” Would Uebbing’s brave new world also prohibit marriage between septuagenarians or between others physically incapable of conceiving children?
Uebbing cites the 10th Amendment to the Constitution to support his argument. He might be better served by reviewing our founders’ noble aspirations for the American people as found in the Declaration of Independence: “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
