Interview with Katy and Nisso Larden, owners
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: Pure passion for pure, good coffe. To us coffee is more than just the beans, it’s the whole experience, the atmosphere, the smell, the baked goods. We moved to the neighborhood two years ago and immediately looked for a neighborhood cafe, just like back home. There was nothing. The spot was available, the need was there — so we went for it.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: Fresh roasted coffee and a full, handmade pastry bakery. Everything is baked daily. No preservatives, not from a box — just real handmade European style baked goods. Our unique food menu includes items from around the world, all made fresh to order. We offer paninis made with bread baked fresh on site. We aimed for a different style of coffee shop, we wanted to bring the European atmosphere and flavor. The smell, the freshness, the music, just a place to come in and feel at home. This is what we call a neighborhood cafe. We believe we found a way to combine the traditional espresso drinks along with speciality items from around the world.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: First of all, having good coffee. We moved with our family to the United States three years ago and we didn’t know many people, especially not in this neighborhood. We own another business, Hey Honey Skincare, and most of that work is office-based. With Coffee Place, we get to meet new and amazing people every day. The feedback from the customers and the appreciation that they share with us is very rewarding. In no time, Coffee Place has became a place for both socializing and business. This is what we love about it.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: The location is a bit hidden, so there is not much foot traffic. It takes time for surrounding neighborhoods that are a bit further than down the street to find out about Coffee Place.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: The coffee shop was really opened for ourselves to enjoy good coffee. Since we have another business, Coffee Place started as an adventure. We have worked as a couple for more than 17 years; we previously owned an online advertising agency in Israel. We have two kids, and we live right around the corner,
