From the venue to the food to the entertainment, there’s never anything ordinary about the signature fundraiser, the Luminocity Gala.
The 2014 edition had artist/musican Mark Mothersbaugh as the special guest and was held at a 26,000-square-foot industrial space not far from the bustling Brighton Boulevard.
During the cocktail reception, guests were free to stroll through a gallery of art that was up for bid while enjoying such unexpected hors d’oeuvres as petite lobster corn dogs, bourbon-braised duck sliders and cotton candy-crusted pork belly bites from .
Three Tomatoes also did the beef short rib dinner that was served later, in an area that was off-limits until it was time for everyone to sit down and walls of beaded curtains parted.
, opened at the MCA on Oct. 30. Mothersbaugh also founded the musical group , and brought six musicians with him to the gala to premiere some of Mothersbaugh’s keyboard compositions.
MCA trustee Nina Sohn; her husband, Min Sohn, principal and portfolio manager at Arrowpoint Partners; and artist Eduardo Sarabia chaired the event and welcomed a crowd that included MCA’s founder, Sue Cannon; Martha Records, chair of the museum’s board of trustees, and her husband, Rich Rainaldi; vice chairs Bart Spaulding and Helen Thorpe, who was there with Sascha Steinway; Karl Kister and Mary Caulkins; Mike Fries; and Vince Abrue.
MCA trustee Tina Walls brought her friends, actors Daphne Maxwell Reid (“Fresh Prince of Bel Air”) and Tim Reid (best known for his role as DJ Venus Flytrap on “WKRP in Cincinnati”).
Others in the capacity crowd were Amy Harmon and her mom, Christy Owen; Brown and Mardi Cannon; Whitney Moehle; Louise Hurlbut and husband Richard Caudle; Will LaBahn; Sharon and Dr. Donald Ferlic; John and Lisa Robinson; Doug and Jean Smooke; and Marcela de la Mar with husband John Fair.
