, the No. 2 conductor with the , will leave his position at the end of the current season, the announced today.

A popular figure with orchestra audiences, O’Neil has been in his job as resident conductor for nine years. He’s best-known as a careful researcher of classical music and for leading his intimate “Inside the Score” programs, which combine musical performances with an educational component.

O’Neil will focus on writing and arranging and guest gigs conducting other orchestras, according to the CSO. A search for his replacement starts next week.

O’Neil has several programs remaining in the 2014-15 season, including a concert on Nov. 14.
