Perhaps Denver Sheriff Department Deputy Rodolfo Duran should consider a transfer to the fire department.
For the second time, officials say Duran has extinguished a fire in the Downtown Detention Center’s laundry room.
Around 5:40 p.m. Thursday, Duran smelled smoke while making rounds. At first, he couldn’t find the source.
While making another pass, he discovered a smoldering bag of rags that had been used by a cleaning detail earlier in the day, said Simon Crittle, a sheriff’s department spokesman.
Duran hosed down the bag and put out the fire, Crittle said. He now has been nominated for an award.
In August, Duran and another jail employee received the department’s Distinguished Service Award for rushing into the smoke-filled laundry room and extinguishing a fire.
Fire officials aren’t sure how the bag of rags ignited, Crittle said.
