Colorado State Patrol has begun clean-up at the scene of a serious two-car accident Friday night at Federal Boulevard and West 54th Avenue.

Five or six people were transported to hospitals following the incident; traffic on Federal Boulevard was still closed in both directions at 10:30 p.m.

The accident occurred a little after 8 p.m, according to both the Colorado State Patrol and the Colorado Department of Transportation, which first reported the incident on their Twitter feeds.

The patrol said the accident involved two vehicles: a 2008 Nissan Altima being driven by a 26-year-old female and a 2001 Volvo S40.

Troopers at the scene told 9News and Fox31 that the Volvo was involved in a street race with a third vehicle on northbound Federal when it hit the Nissan head-on.

At 10:15 p.m., a CSP spokesman would not confirm that the accident involved a motorcycle or a street race.

The CSP said the extent of the injuries suffered in the accident was unknown; it was also uncertain when the street would be re-opened; detours have been placed in the area.

More details will be added when they become available.
