Re: “Should Colorado high schools lose funding over Indian mascots?,” Nov. 7 letters to the editor.
A letter about team mascots that compared Native Americans to animals should serve as a wake-up call. I wish to comfort the letter’s author that animal mascots will remain non-controversial because animals are neither offended nor humiliated by their trademarked mascots, but Native Americans have human feelings (just like the letter-writer might have about a “Boulderite” mascot created by someone not from Boulder).
When we see some in our nation have grown up blind to the feelings of our most disenfranchised racial minority, the rest of us should ask what caused this and, at the very least, make a positive change to what our kids see on our athletic fields.
