Big Bank Hank of pioneering hip-hop group Sugarhill Gang has died, TMZ is reporting. He was 57.

Big Bank Hank of pioneering hip-hop group Sugarhill Gang has died, He was 57.

Hank (born Henry Jackson) had been suffering from cancer and died Tuesday morning in the greater New York City area,

“So sad to hear of our brother’s passing. Rest in peace Big Bank,” the other two founding members of the Sugarhill Gang — Michael “Wonder Mike” Wright and Guy “Master Gee” O’Brien — told TMZ.

The Sugarhill Gang is best known for its 1979 hit, “Rapper’s Delight,” which is the first rap single to become a Top 40 hit. All members of the group come from Englewood, New Jersey and never topped the U.S. charts again after “Rapper’s Delight.”

The Sugarhill Gang released five albums from 1980 to 1999.
